While thinking about the scourging of Jesus, I wondered,
"Why must man feel pain?"  Why are we thus designed,
with nerve endings and transmissions to our brains that
something or some part of our body is in pain?  Why
would God, who loves us, design us so?   Might this be his
answer:    "It is  BECAUSE  I love you that I designed you
to feel pain!  Otherwise, you would destroy your body one
piece at a time.  Without pain, how would you know to
pull you hand from the flame?  How would you know to
stop striking your fingers with the hammer?  How would
you know to stop the blade from passing through the
flesh?  How would you know when you are sick?  I permit
this type of pain to signal you to stop doing the things that
can destroy the flesh!"
  "Yet, there are other pains in my design;  The pains of
lonliness, depression, anxiety and emptiness, all signal you
to stop doing the things that are destroying  your soul;  to
turn away from "self, away from the world, away from
alcohol or drugs, away from obsessions with sex, power
and money,"  and then turn toward Me for help, strength
and peace!  Through surennder, prayer, fasting and love
of others, this type of pain subsides and vanishes!"

A third type of pain and suffering is borne by the
innocent for the sake of the Kingdom of God, for His
Church, for our loved ones and even for our enemies!  This
is "Redemptive Suffering" embraced by members of the
Body of Christ in union with His passion, pain and
suffering.

          Recall the prayer of St Francis:

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I can not
change;

The courage to change the things I can;

And the wisdom to know the difference. Amen.
