Angels are winds and a fiery flame.
Angels are ministering spirits sent to serve.
Hebrews
Chapter 1
7
Of the angels he says: "He makes his angels winds and his ministers a
fiery flame";
13
But to which of the angels has he ever said: "Sit at my right hand until I
make your enemies your footstool"?
14
Are they not all ministering spirits sent to serve, for the sake of those
who are to inherit salvation?
Angels as cherubim with wings to cover.
Exodus
Chapter 37
7
Two cherubim of beaten gold were made for the two ends of the
propitiatory,
8
one cherub fastened at one end, the other at the other end, springing
directly from the propitiatory at its two ends.
9
The cherubim had their wings spread out above, covering the
propitiatory with them. They were turned toward each other, but with
their faces looking toward the propitiatory.
Angels are divine visions that resemble living creatures
with a human form, with wings and various faces.
Ezekiel
Chapter 1
1
1 In the thirtieth year, on the fifth day of the fourth month, while I was
among the exiles by the river Chebar, the heavens opened, and I saw
divine visions.--
me.
4
3 As I looked, a stormwind came from the North, a huge cloud with
flashing fire (enveloped in brightness), from the midst of which (the
midst of the fire) something gleamed like electrum.
5
4 Within it were figures resembling four living creatures that looked
like this: their form was human,
6
but each had four faces and four wings,
7
and their legs went straight down; the soles of their feet were round.
They sparkled with a gleam like burnished bronze.
10
5 Their faces were like this: each of the four had the face of a man, but
on the right side was the face of a lion, and on the left side the face of an
ox, and finally each had the face of an eagle.
9
Their faces (and their wings) looked out on all their four sides; they did
not turn when they moved, but each went straight forward.
12
(Each went straight forward; wherever the spirit wished to go, there
they went; they did not turn when they moved.)
8
Human hands were under their wings, and the wings of one touched
those of another.
11
Each had two wings spread out above so that they touched one
another's, while the other two wings of each covered his body.
13
In among the living creatures something like burning coals of fire could
be seen; they seemed like torches, moving to and fro among the living
creatures. The fire gleamed, and from it came forth flashes of lightning.
23
Beneath the firmament their wings were stretched out, one toward the
other. (Each of them had two covering his body.)
24
Then I heard the sound of their wings, like the roaring of mighty
waters, like the voice of the Almighty. When they moved, the sound of
the tumult was like the din of an army. (And when they stood still, they
lowered their wings.)
Angels are healers.
Tobit
Chapter 3
16
At that very time, the prayer of these two suppliants was heard in the
glorious presence of Almighty God.
17
5 So Raphael was sent to heal them both: to remove the cataracts from
Tobit's eyes, so that he might again see God's sunlight; and to marry
Raguel's daughter Sarah to Tobit's son Tobiah, and then drive the
wicked demon Asmodeus from her. For Tobiah had the right to claim
her before any other who might wish to marry her. In the very moment
that Tobit returned from the courtyard to his house, Raguel's daughter
Sarah came downstairs from her room.
Angels are companions on difficult journeys.
Angels encourage, comfort and console us.
Tobit
Chapter 5
3
1 Tobit answered his son Tobiah: "We exchanged signatures on a
document written in duplicate; I divided it into two parts, and each of
us kept one; his copy I put with the money. Think of it, twenty years
have already passed since I deposited that money! So now, my son, find
yourself a trustworthy man who will make the journey with you. We
will, of course, give him a salary when you return; but get back that
money from Gabael."
4
2 Tobiah went to look for someone acquainted with the roads who
would travel with him to Media. As soon as he went out, he found the
angel Raphael standing before him, though he did not know that this
was an angel of God.
5
Tobiah said to him, "Who are you, young man?" He replied "I am an
Israelite, one of your kinsmen. I have come here to work." Tobiah said,
"Do you know the way to Media?"
6
3 The other replied: "Yes, I have been there many times. I know the
place well and I know all the routes. I have often traveled to Media; I
used to stay with our kinsman Gabael, who lives at Rages in Media. It is
a good two days' travel from Ecbatana to Rages, for Rages is situated at
the mountains, Ecbatana out on the plateau."
7
Tobiah said to him, "Wait for me, young man, till I go back and tell my
father; for I need you to make the journey with me. I will, of course,
pay you."
8
Raphael replied, "Very well, I will wait for you; but do not be long."
9
Tobiah went back to tell his father Tobit what had happened. He said to
him, "I have just found a man who is one of our own Israelite kinsmen!"
Tobit said, "Call the man, so that I may find out what family and tribe
he comes from, and whether he is trustworthy enough to travel with
you, son." Tobiah went out to summon the man, saying, "Young man,
my father would like to see you."
10
4 When Raphael entered the house, Tobit greeted him first. Raphael
said, "Hearty greetings to you!" Tobit replied: "What joy is left for me
any more? Here I am, a blind man who cannot see God's sunlight, but
must remain in darkness, like the dead who no longer see the light!
Though alive, I am among the dead. I can hear a man's voice, but I
cannot see him." Raphael said, "Take courage! God has healing in store
for you; so take courage!" Tobit then said: "My son Tobiah wants to go
to Media. Can you go with him to show him the way? I will of course
pay you, brother." Raphael answered: "Yes, I can go with him, for I
know all the routes. I have often traveled to Media and crossed all its
plains and mountains; so I know every road well."
11
Tobit asked, "Brother, tell me, please, what family and tribe are you
from?"
12
Raphael said: "Why? Do you need a tribe and a family? Or are you
looking for a hired man to travel with your son?" Tobit replied, "I wish
to know truthfully whose son you are, brother, and what your name is."
13
5 Raphael answered, "I am Azariah, son of Hananiah the elder, one of
your own kinsmen."
14
Tobit exclaimed: "Welcome! God save you, brother! Do not be
provoked with me, brother, for wanting to learn the truth about your
family. So it turns out that you are a kinsman, and from a noble and
good line! I knew Hananiah and Nathaniah, the two sons of Shemaiah
the elder; with me they used to make the pilgrimage to Jerusalem,
where we would worship together. No, they did not stray from the right
path; your kinsmen are good men. You are certainly of good lineage,
and welcome!"
15
6 Then he added: "For each day you are away I will give you the
normal wages, plus expenses for you and for my son. If you go with my
son,
16
I will even add a bonus to your wages!" Raphael replied: "I will go with
him; have no fear. In good health we shall leave you, and in good health
we shall return to you, for the way is safe."
17
Tobit said, "God bless you, brother." Then he called his son and said to
him: "My son, prepare whatever you need for the journey, and set out
with your kinsman. May God in heaven protect you on the way and
bring you back to me safe and sound; and may his angel accompany you
for safety, my son." Before setting out on his journey, Tobiah kissed his
father and mother. Tobit said to him, "Have a safe journey."
18
But his mother began to weep. She said to Tobit: "Why have you
decided to send my child away? Is he not the staff to which we cling,
ever there with us in all that we do?
19
I hope more money is not your chief concern! Rather let it be a ransom
for our son!
20
What the Lord has given us to live on is certainly enough for us."
21
Tobit reassured her: "Have no such thought. Our son will leave in good
health and come back to us in good health. Your own eyes will see the
day when he returns to you safe and sound.
Tobit
Chapter 6
1
Then she stopped weeping.
2
When the boy left home, accompanied by the angel, the dog followed
Tobiah out of the house and went with them. The travelers walked till
nightfall, and made camp beside the Tigris River.
Angels instruct us on our journey.
Angels protect us from demons.
Tobit
Chapter 8
1
When they had finished eating and drinking, the girl's parents wanted
to retire. They brought the young man out of the dining room and led
him into the bedroom.
2
1 At this point Tobiah, mindful of Raphael's instructions, took the fish's
liver and heart from the bag which he had with him, and placed them
on the embers for the incense.
3
2 The demon, repelled by the odor of the fish, fled into Upper Egypt;
Raphael pursued him there and bound him hand and foot. Then
Raphael returned immediately.
Angels can use matter as miraculous healing medicine.
Tobit
Chapter 11
1
Then they left and began their return journey. When they were near
Kaserin, just before Nineveh,
2
Raphael said: "You know how we left your father.
3
Let us hurry on ahead of your wife to prepare the house while the rest
of the party are still on the way."
4
So they both went on ahead and Raphael said to Tobiah, "Have the gall
in your hand!" And the dog ran along behind them.
5
Meanwhile, Anna sat watching the road by which her son was to come.
6
When she saw him coming, she exclaimed to his father, "Tobit, your son
is coming, and the man who traveled with him!"
7
Raphael said to Tobiah before he reached his father: "I am certain that
his eyes will be opened.
8
Smear the fish gall on them. This medicine will make the cataracts
shrink and peel off from his eyes; then your father will again be able to
see the light of day."
9
Then Anna ran up to her son, threw her arms around him, and said to
him, "Now that I have seen you again, son, I am ready to die!" And she
sobbed aloud.
10
Tobit got up and stumbled out through the courtyard gate. Tobiah went
up to him
11
with the fish gall in his hand, and holding him firmly, blew into his eyes.
"Courage, father," he said.
12
Next he smeared the medicine on his eyes,
13
and it made them smart. Then, beginning at the corners of Tobit's eyes,
Tobiah used both hands to peel off the cataracts. When Tobit saw his
son, he threw his arms around him
14
and wept. He exclaimed, "I can see you, son, the light of my eyes!" Then
he said: "Blessed be God, and praised be his great name, and blessed be
all his holy angels. May his holy name be praised throughout all the
ages,
15
Because it was he who scourged me, and it is he who has had mercy on
me. Behold, I now see my son Tobiah!" Then Tobit went back in,
rejoicing and praising God with full voice. Tobiah told his father that
his journey had been a success; that he had brought back the money;
and that he had married Raguel's daughter Sarah, who would arrive
shortly, for she was approaching the gate of Nineveh. '
16
Rejoicing and praising God, Tobit went out to the gate of Nineveh to
meet his daughter-in-law. When the people of Nineveh saw him walking
along briskly, with no one leading him by the hand, they were amazed.
17
Before them all Tobit proclaimed how God had mercifully restored
sight to his eyes. When Tobit reached Sarah, the wife of his son Tobiah,
he greeted her: "Welcome, my daughter! Blessed be your God for
bringing you to us, daughter! Blessed are your father and your mother.
Blessed is my son Tobiah, and blessed are you, daughter! Welcome to
your home with blessing and joy. Come in, daughter!" That day there
was joy for all the Jews who lived in Nineveh.
18
Ahiqar and his nephew Nadab also came to rejoice with Tobit. They
celebrated Tobiah's wedding feast for seven happy days, and he
received many gifts.
Angels are humble and direct all thanks from us, to God.
Angels present our prayers before the glory of God.
Angels come to us to do God’s will.
Angels are visions, though we may see them eat or drink.
Tobit
Chapter 12
1
1 When the wedding celebration came to an end, Tobit called his son
Tobiah and said to him, "Son, see to it that you give what is due to the
man who made the journey with you; give him a bonus too."
2
Tobiah said: "Father, how much shall I pay him? It would not hurt me
at all to give him half of all the wealth he brought back with me.
3
He led me back safe and sound; he cured my wife; he brought the
money back with me; and he cured you. How much of a bonus should I
give him?"
4
Tobit answered, "It is only fair, son, that he should receive half of all
that he brought back."
5
So Tobiah called Raphael and said, "Take as your wages half of all that
you have brought back, and go in peace."
6
2 3 Raphael called the two men aside privately and said to them:
"Thank God! Give him the praise and the glory. Before all the living,
acknowledge the many good things he has done for you, by blessing and
extolling his name in song. Before all men, honor and proclaim God's
deeds, and do not be slack in praising him.
7
A king's secret it is prudent to keep, but the works of God are to be
declared and made known. Praise them with due honor. Do good, and
evil will not find its way to you.
8
4 Prayer and fasting are good, but better than either is almsgiving
accompanied by righteousness. A little with righteousness is better than
abundance with wickedness. It is better to give alms than to store up
gold;
9
for almsgiving saves one from death and expiates every sin. Those who
regularly give alms shall enjoy a full life;
10
but those habitually guilty of sin are their own worst enemies.
11
"I will now tell you the whole truth; I will conceal nothing at all from
you. I have already said to you, 'A king's secret it is prudent to keep,
but the works of God are to be made known with due honor.'
12
5 I can now tell you that when you, Tobit, and Sarah prayed, it was I
who presented and read the record of your prayer before the Glory of
the Lord; and I did the same thing when you used to bury the dead.
13
When you did not hesitate to get up and leave your dinner in order to
go and bury the dead,
14
6 I was sent to put you to the test. At the same time, however, God
commissioned me to heal you and your daughter-in-law Sarah.
15
I am Raphael, one of the seven angels who enter and serve before the
Glory of the Lord."
16
Stricken with fear, the two men fell to the ground.
17
But Raphael said to them: "No need to fear; you are safe. Thank God
now and forever.
18
As for me, when I came to you it was not out of any favor on my part,
but because it was God's will. So continue to thank him every day;
praise him with song.
19
Even though you watched me eat and drink. I did not really do so; what
you were seeing was a vision.
20
So now get up from the ground and praise God. Behold, I am about to
ascend to him who sent me; write down all these things that have
happened to you."
21
When Raphael ascended they rose to their feet and could no longer see
him.
22
They kept thanking God and singing his praises; and they continued to
acknowledge these marvelous deeds which he had done when the angel
of God appeared to them.
Angels are Sentries.
Genesis
Chapter 3
24
5 When he expelled the man, he settled him east of the garden of Eden;
and he stationed the cherubim and the fiery revolving sword, to guard
the way to the tree of life.
Angels can repel evil with supernatural power.
Angels can destroy entire cities.
Genesis
Chapter 19
1
The two angels reached Sodom in the evening, as Lot was sitting at the
gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he got up to greet them; and
bowing down with his face to the ground,
2
1 he said, "Please, gentlemen, come aside into your servant's house for
the night, and bathe your feet; you can get up early to continue your
journey." But they replied, "No, we shall pass the night in the town
square."
3
He urged them so strongly, however, that they turned aside to his place
and entered his house. He prepared a meal for them, baking cakes
without leaven, and they dined.
4
Before they went to bed, all the townsmen of Sodom, both young and
old--all the people to the last man--closed in on the house.
5
They called to Lot and said to him, "Where are the men who came to
your house tonight? Bring them out to us that we may have intimacies
with them."
6
Lot went out to meet them at the entrance. When he had shut the door
behind him,
7
he said, "I beg you, my brothers, not to do this wicked thing.
8
I have two daughters who have never had intercourse with men. Let me
bring them out to you, and you may do to them as you please. But don't
do anything to these men, for you know they have come under the
shelter of my roof."
9
They replied, "Stand back! This fellow," they sneered, "came here as
an immigrant, and now he dares to give orders! We'll treat you worse
than them!" With that, they pressed hard against Lot, moving in closer
to break down the door.
10
But his guests put out their hands, pulled Lot inside with them, and
closed the door;
11
2 at the same time they struck the men at the entrance of the house, one
and all, with such a blinding light that they were utterly unable to
reach the doorway.
12
3 Then the angels said to Lot: "Who else belongs to you here? Your
sons (sons-in-law) and your daughters and all who belong to you in the
city--take them away from it!
13
We are about to destroy this place, for the outcry reaching the LORD
against those in the city is so great that he has sent us to destroy it."
14
4 So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who had contracted
marriage with his daughters. "Get up and leave this place," he told
them; "the LORD is about to destroy the city." But his sons-in-law
thought he was joking.
15
As dawn was breaking, the angels urged Lot on, saying, "On your way!
Take with you your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you
will be swept away in the punishment of the city."
16
When he hesitated, the men, by the LORD'S mercy, seized his hand and
the hands of his wife and his two daughters and led them to safety
outside the city.
17
As soon as they had been brought outside, he was told: "Flee for your
life! Don't look back or stop anywhere on the Plain. Get off to the hills
at once, or you will be swept away."
18
"Oh, no, my lord!" replied Lot.
19
"You have already thought enough of your servant to do me the great
kindness of intervening to save my life. But I cannot flee to the hills to
keep the disaster from overtaking me, and so I shall die.
20
5 Look, this town ahead is near enough to escape to. It's only a small
place. Let me flee there--it's a small place, isn't it?--that my life may be
saved."
21
"Well, then," he replied, "I will also grant you the favor you now ask. I
will not overthrow the town you speak of.
22
Hurry, escape there! I cannot do anything until you arrive there." That
is why the town is called Zoar.
23
The sun was just rising over the earth as Lot arrived in Zoar;
24
at the same time the LORD rained down sulphurous fire upon Sodom
and Gomorrah (from the LORD out of heaven).
25
6 He overthrew those cities and the whole Plain, together with the
inhabitants of the cities and the produce of the soil.
26
But Lot's wife looked back, and she was turned into a pillar of salt.
Angels appear as flaming fire.
Exodus
Chapter 3
1
1 Meanwhile Moses was tending the flock of his father-in-law Jethro,
the priest of Midian. Leading the flock across the desert, he came to
Horeb, the mountain of God.
2
2 There an angel of the LORD appeared to him in fire flaming out of a
bush. As he looked on, he was surprised to see that the bush, though on
fire, was not consumed.
Angels are guardians.
Psalms
Chapter 91
11
3 For God commands the angels to guard you in all your ways.
12
With their hands they shall support you, lest you strike your foot
against a stone
Angels are messengers from God.
Luke
Chapter 1
5
2 In the days of Herod, King of Judea, 3 there was a priest named
Zechariah of the priestly division of Abijah; his wife was from the
daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
6
Both were righteous in the eyes of God, observing all the
commandments and ordinances of the Lord blamelessly.
7
But they had no child, 4 because Elizabeth was barren and both were
advanced in years.
8
Once when he was serving as priest in his division's turn before God,
9
according to the practice of the priestly service, he was chosen by lot to
enter the sanctuary of the Lord to burn incense.
10
Then, when the whole assembly of the people was praying outside at the
hour of the incense offering,
11
the angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right of the altar
of incense.
12
Zechariah was troubled by what he saw, and fear came upon him.
13
But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, 5 Zechariah, because your
prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and
you shall name him John.
14
And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth,
15
for he will be great in the sight of (the) Lord. He will drink neither
wine nor strong drink. 6 He will be filled with the holy Spirit even from
his mother's womb,
16
and he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.
17
He will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah 7 to turn the
hearts of fathers toward children and the disobedient to the
understanding of the righteous, to prepare a people fit for the Lord."
18
Then Zechariah said to the angel, "How shall I know this? For I am an
old man, and my wife is advanced in years."
19
And the angel said to him in reply, "I am Gabriel, 8 who stand before
God. I was sent to speak to you and to announce to you this good news.
20
But now you will be speechless and unable to talk 9 until the day these
things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be
fulfilled at their proper time."
21
Meanwhile the people were waiting for Zechariah and were amazed
that he stayed so long in the sanctuary.
22
But when he came out, he was unable to speak to them, and they
realized that he had seen a vision in the sanctuary. He was gesturing to
them but remained mute.
23
Then, when his days of ministry were completed, he went home.
24
After this time his wife Elizabeth conceived, and she went into seclusion
for five months, saying,
25
"So has the Lord done for me at a time when he has seen fit to take
away my disgrace before others."
26
10 In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of
Galilee called Nazareth,
27
to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and
the virgin's name was Mary.
28
And coming to her, he said, "Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you."
29
But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort
of greeting this might be.
30
Then the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found
favor with God.
31
Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall
name him Jesus.
32
He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, 11 and the
Lord God will give him the throne of David his father,
33
and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom
there will be no end."
34
But Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I have no relations
with a man?" 12
35
And the angel said to her in reply, "The holy Spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the
child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.
36
And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived 13 a son in her
old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren;
37
for nothing will be impossible for God."
Angels calm our fears.
Matthew
Chapter 1
18
6 Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his
mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, 7 but before they lived together,
she was found with child through the holy Spirit.
19
Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, 8 yet unwilling to
expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly.
20
Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord 9 appeared
to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to
take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the holy Spirit
that this child has been conceived in her.
21
She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, 10 because he will
save his people from their sins."
22
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:
23
11 "Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall
name him Emmanuel," which means "God is with us."
24
When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded
him and took his wife into his home.
25
He had no relations with her until she bore a son, 12 and he named him
Jesus.
Angels proclaim good news and praise.
Luke
Chapter 2
And Joseph too went up from Galilee from the town of Nazareth to
Judea, to the city of David that is called Bethlehem, because he was of
the house and family of David,
5
to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.
6
While they were there, the time came for her to have her child,
7
and she gave birth to her firstborn son. 3 She wrapped him in
swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room
for them in the inn.
8
4 Now there were shepherds in that region living in the fields and
keeping the night watch over their flock.
9
The angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord
shone around them, and they were struck with great fear.
10
The angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you
good news of great joy that will be for all the people.
11
5 For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is
Messiah and Lord.
12
And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in
swaddling clothes and lying in a manger."
13
And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel,
praising God and saying:
14
6 "Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his
favor rests."
Angels warn us of danger.
Matthew
Chapter 2
12
And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they
departed for their country by another way.
13
6 When they had departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to
Joseph in a dream and said, "Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to
Egypt, 7 and stay there until I tell you. Herod is going to search for the
child to destroy him."
14
Joseph rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed
for Egypt.
15
19
When Herod had died, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared in a
dream to Joseph in Egypt
20
and said, "Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of
Israel, for those who sought the child's life are dead." 10
21
He rose, took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel.
Angels comfort.
Matthew
Chapter 4
1
1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the
devil.
2
He fasted for forty days and forty nights, 2 and afterwards he was
hungry.
3
The tempter approached and said to him, "If you are the Son of God,
command that these stones become loaves of bread."
4
3 He said in reply, "It is written: 'One does not live by bread alone, but
by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.'"
5
4 Then the devil took him to the holy city, and made him stand on the
parapet of the temple,
6
and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it
is written: 'He will command his angels concerning you and 'with their
hands they will support you, lest you dash your foot against a stone.'"
7
Jesus answered him, "Again it is written, 'You shall not put the Lord,
your God, to the test.'"
8
Then the devil took him up to a very high mountain, and showed him all
the kingdoms of the world in their magnificence,
9
and he said to him, "All these I shall give to you, if you will prostrate
yourself and worship me." 5
10
At this, Jesus said to him, "Get away, Satan! It is written: 'The Lord,
your God, shall you worship and him alone shall you serve.'"
11
Then the devil left him and, behold, angels came and ministered to him.
Angels can be warriors
Matthew
Chapter 26
51
And behold, one of those who accompanied Jesus put his hand to his
sword, drew it, and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his ear.
52
Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back into its sheath, for all
who take the sword will perish by the sword.
53
Do you think that I cannot call upon my Father and he will not provide
me at this moment with more than twelve legions of angels?
Angels give strength.
Luke
Chapter 22
39
Then going out he went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and
the disciples followed him.
40
When he arrived at the place he said to them, "Pray that you may not
undergo the test."
41
After withdrawing about a stone's throw from them and kneeling, he
prayed,
42
saying, "Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me; still,
not my will but yours be done."
43
14 (And to strengthen him an angel from heaven appeared to him.
44
He was in such agony and he prayed so fervently that his sweat became
like drops of blood falling on the ground.)
Angels are mighty.
Revelation
Chapter 5
2
Then I saw a mighty angel who proclaimed in a loud voice, "Who is
worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?"
Angels can control the elements.
Angels dispense God’s wrath.
Revelation
Chapter 7
1
1 After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, 2
holding back the four winds of the earth so that no wind could blow on
land or sea or against any tree.
2
Then I saw another angel come up from the East, 3 holding the seal of
the living God. He cried out in a loud voice to the four angels who were
given power to damage the land and the sea,
3
"Do not damage the land or the sea or the trees until we put the seal on
the foreheads of the servants of our God."
11
All the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the
four living creatures. They prostrated themselves before the throne,
worshiped God,
12
and exclaimed: "Amen. Blessing and glory, wisdom and thanksgiving,
honor, power, and might be to our God forever and ever. Amen."
Revelation
Chapter 8
2
And I saw that the seven angels who stood before God were given seven
trumpets.
3
Another angel came and stood at the altar, 3 holding a gold censer. He
was given a great quantity of incense to offer, along with the prayers of
all the holy ones, on the gold altar that was before the throne.
4
The smoke of the incense along with the prayers of the holy ones went
up before God from the hand of the angel.
5
Then the angel took the censer, filled it with burning coals from the
altar, and hurled it down to the earth. There were peals of thunder,
rumblings, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake.
6
The seven angels who were holding the seven trumpets prepared to
blow them.
7
When the first one blew his trumpet, there came hail and fire mixed
with blood, which was hurled down to the earth. A third of the land was
burned up, along with a third of the trees and all green grass. 4
8
5 When the second angel blew his trumpet, something like a large
burning mountain was hurled into the sea. A third of the sea turned to
blood,
9
a third of the creatures living in the sea 6 died, and a third of the ships
were wrecked.
10
When the third angel blew his trumpet, a large star burning like a
torch fell from the sky. It fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs
of water.
11
The star was called "Wormwood," 7 and a third of all the water turned
to wormwood. Many people died from this water, because it was made
bitter.
12
When the fourth angel blew his trumpet, a third of the sun, a third of
the moon, and a third of the stars were struck, so that a third of them
became dark. The day lost its light for a third of the time, as did the
night.
13
Then I looked again and heard an eagle flying high overhead cry out in
a loud voice, "Woe! Woe! Woe 8 to the inhabitants of the earth from the
rest of the trumpet blasts that the three angels are about to blow!"
Revelation
Chapter 9
1
1 Then the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star 2 that had
fallen from the sky to the earth. It was given the key for the passage to
the abyss.
2
It opened the passage to the abyss, and smoke came up out of the
passage like smoke from a huge furnace. The sun and the air were
darkened by the smoke from the passage.
3
Locusts came out of the smoke onto the land, and they were given the
same power as scorpions 3 of the earth.
4
They were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any plant or any
tree, but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their
foreheads.
5
They were not allowed to kill them but only to torment them for five
months; 4 the torment they inflicted was like that of a scorpion when it
stings a person.
6
During that time these people will seek death but will not find it, and
they will long to die but death will escape them.
7
5 The appearance of the locusts was like that of horses ready for battle.
On their heads they wore what looked like crowns of gold; their faces
were like human faces,
8
and they had hair like women's hair. Their teeth were like lions' teeth,
9
and they had chests like iron breastplates. The sound of their wings was
like the sound of many horse-drawn chariots racing into battle.
10
They had tails like scorpions, with stingers; with their tails they had
power to harm people for five months.
11
They had as their king the angel of the abyss, whose name in Hebrew is
Abaddon 6 and in Greek Apollyon.
12
The first woe has passed, but there are two more to come.
13
7 Then the sixth angel blew his trumpet, and I heard a voice coming
from the [four] 8 horns of the gold altar before God,
14
telling the sixth angel who held the trumpet, "Release the four angels 9
who are bound at the banks of the great river Euphrates."
15
So the four angels were released, who were prepared for this hour, day,
month, and year to kill a third of the human race.
16
The number of cavalry troops was two hundred million; I heard their
number.
Revelation
Chapter 10
1
1 2 Then I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven wrapped
in a cloud, with a halo around his head; his face was like the sun and his
feet were like pillars of fire.
2
In his hand he held a small scroll that had been opened. He placed his
right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land, 3
3
and then he cried out in a loud voice as a lion roars. When he cried out,
the seven thunders raised their voices, too.
4
When the seven thunders had spoken, I was about to write it down; but
I heard a voice from heaven say, "Seal up what the seven thunders have
spoken, but do not write it down."
5
Then the angel I saw standing on the sea and on the land raised his
right hand to heaven
6
and swore by the one who lives forever and ever, who created heaven
and earth and sea 4 and all that is in them, "There shall be no more
delay.
7
At the time when you hear the seventh angel blow his trumpet, the
mysterious plan of God 5 shall be fulfilled, as he promised to his
servants the prophets."
8
Then the voice that I had heard from heaven spoke to me again and
said, "Go, take the scroll that lies open in the hand of the angel who is
standing on the sea and on the land."
9
So I went up to the angel and told him to give me the small scroll. He
said to me, "Take and swallow it. It will turn your stomach sour, but in
your mouth it will taste as sweet 6 as honey."
10
I took the small scroll from the angel's hand and swallowed it. In my
mouth it was like sweet honey, but when I had eaten it, my stomach
turned sour.
11
Then someone said to me, "You must prophesy again about many
peoples, nations, tongues, and kings." 7
Revelation
Chapter 11
15
10 Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet. There were loud voices in
heaven, saying, "The kingdom of the world now belongs to our Lord
and to his Anointed, and he will reign forever and ever."
There are God’s Holy Angels and there are evil, fallen Angels.
Revelation
Chapter 12
7
7 Then war broke out in heaven; Michael 8 and his angels battled
against the dragon. The dragon and its angels fought back,
8
but they did not prevail and there was no longer any place for them in
heaven.
9
The huge dragon, the ancient serpent, 9 who is called the Devil and
Satan, who deceived the whole world, was thrown down to earth, and
its angels were thrown down with it.
10
Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: "Now have salvation and
power come, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his
Anointed. For the accuser 10 of our brothers is cast out, who accuses
them before our God day and night.
11
They conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their
testimony; love for life did not deter them from death.
12
Therefore, rejoice, you heavens, and you who dwell in them. But woe to
you, earth and sea, for the Devil has come down to you in great fury, for
he knows he has but a short time."
Angels can fly.
Angels can have loud voices.
Revelation
Chapter 14
6
5 Then I saw another angel flying high overhead, with everlasting good
news 6 to announce to those who dwell on earth, to every nation, tribe,
tongue, and people.
7
He said in a loud voice, "Fear God and give him glory, for his time has
come to sit in judgment. Worship him who made heaven and earth and
sea and springs of water."
8
A second angel followed, saying: "Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great,
that made all the nations drink the wine of her licentious passion." 7
9
A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice, "Anyone who
worships the beast or its image, or accepts its mark on forehead or
hand,
10
will also drink the wine of God's fury, 8 poured full strength into the
cup of his wrath, and will be tormented in burning sulfur before the
holy angels and before the Lamb.
11
The smoke of the fire that torments them will rise forever and ever, and
there will be no relief day or night for those who worship the beast or
its image or accept the mark of its name."
12
Here is what sustains the holy ones who keep God's commandments and
their faith in Jesus. 9
13
I heard a voice from heaven say, "Write this: Blessed are the dead who
die in the Lord from now on." "Yes," said the Spirit, "let them find rest
from their labors, for their works accompany them." 10
14
11 Then I looked and there was a white cloud, and sitting on the cloud
one who looked like a son of man, with a gold crown on his head and a
sharp sickle in his hand.
15
Another angel came out of the temple, crying out in a loud voice to the
one sitting on the cloud, "Use your sickle and reap the harvest, for the
time to reap has come, because the earth's harvest is fully ripe."
16
So the one who was sitting on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth,
and the earth was harvested.
17
Then another angel came out of the temple in heaven who also had a
sharp sickle.
18
Then another angel (came) from the altar, 12 (who) was in charge of the
fire, and cried out in a loud voice to the one who had the sharp sickle,
"Use your sharp sickle and cut the clusters from the earth's vines, for
its grapes are ripe."
19
So the angel swung his sickle over the earth and cut the earth's vintage.
He threw it into the great wine press of God's fury.
20
The wine press was trodden outside the city and blood poured out of the
wine press to the height of a horse's bridle for two hundred miles. 13
Angels dispense God’s fury.
Revelation
Chapter 15
1
1 Then I saw in heaven another sign, 2 great and awe-inspiring: seven
angels with the seven last plagues, for through them God's fury is
accomplished.
5
5 After this I had another vision. The temple that is the heavenly tent of
testimony 6 opened,
6
and the seven angels with the seven plagues came out of the temple.
They were dressed in clean white linen, with a gold sash around their
chests.
7
One of the four living creatures gave the seven angels seven gold bowls
filled with the fury of God, who lives forever and ever.
8
Then the temple became so filled with the smoke from God's glory and
might that no one could enter it until the seven plagues of the seven
angels had been accomplished.
Revelation
Chapter 16
1
1 I heard a loud voice speaking from the temple to the seven angels,
"Go and pour out the seven bowls of God's fury upon the earth."
2
The first angel went and poured out his bowl on the earth. Festering
and ugly sores broke out on those who had the mark of the beast or
worshiped its image. 2
3
3 The second angel poured out his bowl on the sea. The sea turned to
blood like that from a corpse; every creature living in the sea died.
4
The third angel poured out his bowl on the rivers and springs of water.
These also turned to blood.
5
Then I heard the angel in charge of the waters say: "You are just, O
Holy One, who are and who were, in passing this sentence.
6
For they have shed the blood of the holy ones and the prophets, and you
(have) given them blood to drink; it is what they deserve."
7
Then I heard the altar cry out, "Yes, Lord God almighty, your
judgments are true and just."
8
The fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun. It was given the power
to burn people with fire.
9
People were burned by the scorching heat and blasphemed the name of
God who had power over these plagues, but they did not repent or give
him glory.
10
The fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast. 4 Its
kingdom was plunged into darkness, and people bit their tongues in pain
11
and blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and sores. But
they did not repent of their works.
12
The sixth angel emptied his bowl on the great river Euphrates. Its
water was dried up to prepare the way for the kings of the East. 5
13
I saw three unclean spirits like frogs 6 come from the mouth of the
dragon, from the mouth of the beast, and from the mouth of the false
prophet.
14
These were demonic spirits who performed signs. They went out to the
kings of the whole world to assemble them for the battle on the great
day of God the almighty.
15
("Behold, I am coming like a thief." 7 Blessed is the one who watches
and keeps his clothes ready, so that he may not go naked and people see
him exposed.)
16
They then assembled the kings in the place that is named Armageddon
8 in Hebrew.
17
The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air. A loud voice came
out of the temple from the throne, saying, "It is done."
18
Then there were lightning flashes, rumblings, and peals of thunder, and
a great earthquake. It was such a violent earthquake that there has
never been one like it since the human race began on earth.
19
The great city 9 was split into three parts, and the gentile cities fell. But
God remembered great Babylon, giving it the cup filled with the wine of
his fury and wrath.
20
10 Every island fled, and mountains disappeared.
21
Large hailstones like huge weights came down from the sky on people,
and they blasphemed God for the plague of hail because this plague was
so severe.
Angels can transport us by spirit and show us visions.
Revelation
Chapter 17
1
1 Then one of the seven angels who were holding the seven bowls came
and said to me, "Come here. I will show you the judgment on the great
harlot 2 who lives near the many waters.
2
3 The kings of the earth have had intercourse with her, and the
inhabitants of the earth became drunk on the wine of her harlotry."
3
Then he carried me away in spirit to a deserted place where I saw a
woman seated on a scarlet beast 4 that was covered with blasphemous
names, with seven heads and ten horns.
6
5 I saw that the woman was drunk on the blood of the holy ones and on
the blood of the witnesses to Jesus. 6 When I saw her I was greatly
amazed.
7
The angel said to me, "Why are you amazed? I will explain to you the
mystery of the woman and of the beast that carries her, the beast with
the seven heads and the ten horns.
8
7 The beast that you saw existed once but now exists no longer. It will
come up from the abyss and is headed for destruction. The inhabitants
of the earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from
the foundation of the world shall be amazed when they see the beast,
because it existed once but exists no longer, and yet it will come again.
9
Here is a clue 8 for one who has wisdom. The seven heads represent
seven hills upon which the woman sits. They also represent seven kings:
10
five have already fallen, one still lives, and the last has not yet come, 9
and when he comes he must remain only a short while.
11
The beast 10 that existed once but exists no longer is an eighth king, but
really belongs to the seven and is headed for destruction.
12
The ten horns that you saw represent ten kings who have not yet been
crowned; 11 they will receive royal authority along with the beast for
one hour.
13
They are of one mind and will give their power and authority to the
beast.
14
They will fight with the Lamb, but the Lamb will conquer them, for he
is Lord of lords and king of kings, and those with him are called,
chosen, and faithful."
15
Then he said to me, "The waters that you saw where the harlot lives
represent large numbers of peoples, nations, and tongues.
16
The ten horns 12 that you saw and the beast will hate the harlot; they
will leave her desolate and naked; they will eat her flesh and consume
her with fire.
17
For God has put it into their minds to carry out his purpose and to
make them come to an agreement to give their kingdom to the beast
until the words of God are accomplished.
18
The woman whom you saw represents the great city that has
sovereignty over the kings of the earth."
There are special Angels.
Some Angels are mighty.
Revelation
Chapter 18
1
1 After this I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having
great authority, and the earth became illumined by his splendor.
2
2 He cried out in a mighty voice: "Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great.
She has become a haunt for demons. She is a cage for every unclean
spirit, a cage for every unclean bird, (a cage for every unclean) and
disgusting (beast).
3
For all the nations have drunk 3 the wine of her licentious passion. The
kings of the earth had intercourse with her, and the merchants of the
earth grew rich from her drive for luxury."
21
A mighty angel picked up a stone like a huge millstone and threw it into
the sea and said: "With such force will Babylon the great city be
thrown down, and will never be found again.
22
No melodies of harpists and musicians, flutists and trumpeters, will ever
be heard in you again. No craftsmen in any trade will ever be found in
you again. No sound of the millstone will ever be heard in you again.
23
No light from a lamp will ever be seen in you again. No voices of bride
and groom will ever be heard in you again. Because your merchants
were the great ones of the world, all nations were led astray by your
magic potion.
24
In her was found the blood of prophets and holy ones and all who have
been slain on the earth."
Angels are fellow servants.
Revelation
Chapter 19
9
Then the angel said to me, "Write this: Blessed 5 are those who have
been called to the wedding feast of the Lamb." And he said to me,
"These words are true; they come from God."
10
I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, "Don't! I am a fellow
servant of yours and of your brothers who bear witness to Jesus.
Worship God. Witness to Jesus is the spirit of prophecy." 6
17
11 Then I saw an angel standing on the sun. He cried out (in) a loud
voice to all the birds flying high overhead, "Come here. Gather for
God's great feast,
18
to eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of military officers, and the flesh of
warriors, the flesh of horses and of their riders, and the flesh of all, free
and slave, small and great."
Angels can be Jailers.
Revelation
Chapter 20
1
1 Then I saw an angel come down from heaven, holding in his hand the
key to the abyss 2 and a heavy chain.
2
He seized the dragon, the ancient serpent, which is the Devil or Satan, 3
and tied it up for a thousand years
3
and threw it into the abyss, which he locked over it and sealed, so that it
could no longer lead the nations astray until the thousand years are
completed. After this, it is to be released for a short time.
Angels can show us God’s Kingdom
Revelation
Chapter 21
9
9 One of the seven angels who held the seven bowls filled with the seven
last plagues came and said to me, "Come here. I will show you the
bride, the wife of the Lamb." 10
10
He took me in spirit to a great, high mountain and showed me the holy
city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God.
15
12 The one who spoke to me held a gold measuring rod to measure the
city, its gates, and its wall.
Revelation
Chapter 22
1
Then the angel showed me the river of life-giving water, 1 sparkling like
crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb
8
It is I, John, who heard and saw these things, and when I heard and saw
them I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed them to
me.
9
But he said to me, "Don't! I am a fellow servant of yours and of your
brothers the prophets and of those who keep the message of this book.
Worship God."
